Woodland track and field tunes up at Woody Wilson invite By Democrat sports staff Created: 04/18/2011 02:30:35 AM PDT
Woodland High School's boys 1,600-meter relay squad finished fourth overall at the prestigious Woody Wilson Invitational track and field meet at UC Davis on Friday.
The Wolves squad, consisting of Doug Coman, billy Landis, Daniel Aguirre and Matt Murphy, ran in the third heat and recorded a time of three minutes, 27.73 seconds.
Aguirre, a freshman, also ran a sub-52-second, 400-meter leg leg on Woodland's distance medley relay team earlier in the day. He ran 52.3 for 400 meters on his 1,600-relay split.
In terms of competition level the Woody Wilson Invitational, which features many of the Sac-Joaquin Section's best athletes and some from outside of the section, is considered on par with the section Masters meet, if not better.
We look to Woody Wilson as that mid-season check-in, Wolves coach Chuck Bruns said. We're kind of checking in on fitness levels, putting together things like relay teams.
With our (boys 1,600 relay) running 3:27.0 now and we've got a brand new freshman in their, I think they're ready to run six or seven seconds faster in May if everyone stays healthy.
Other top Wolves boys results included Kenny Coleman finishing ninth in the shot put with a best of 46-4 1/4, Matt Murphy finishing eighth in the 800 (1:57.25), Billy Landis winning his 300 hurdles heat and finishing ninth overall (40.77) and the distance medley squad of Aguirre, Jack Mast, Aric Strohmeyer and Matt Clavelli finishing 17th overall (11:37.0).
