Belfast — Despite damp, cold conditions, young student-athletes braved the elements Wednesday to compete in a Busline League middle school track-and-field meet at Belfast Area High School.

Youngsters from Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Rockland District Middle School, Camden-Rockport Middle School, Medomak Middle School and Wiscasset Middle School competed in the meet.

The meet was made more fun because many Belfast Area High School track-and-field athletes officiated, timed and helped with the meet, with one of the most engaging being Abbie Wessels, who manned the microphone to keep the fans and youngsters updated on the situation. She also promoted the concession stand and was not above singing for the crowd.

Also, one of the interesting events for the youngsters was the turbo javelin, which is shaped like Nerf missle, of sorts. It certainly is safer than the metal javelins flung by the high school athletes and is a good way for the younger athletes to learn the throwing technique.
