Vacaville High School track and field sweeps Will C. Wood By Reporter Sports Staff Posted: 04/06/2011 01:18:37 AM PDT
Who knows what Brianna French might have done in the shot put?
The Vacaville High School senior missed one of her specialties, but returned from a recruiting trip just in time to smash her own school record in the discus throw with a toss of 151 feet, 3 inches on Tuesday at Tom Zunino Stadium.
I was really excited watching college athletes throw, said French, who visited Brigham Young University. I was so pumped, I just wanted to throw. I said, 'We've got to get to this meet so I can throw.'
French's toss was one of several solid marks as the Bulldogs swept crosstown rival Will C. Wood.
Vacaville's girls won every event and downed Wood 123-9.
The Bulldog boys added a 108-28 win behind Curtis Bleasdale, who had a personal-best discus throw of 168-8.
French shattered her own school mark of 144-8, set in last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet. She also topped her personal-best of 150-2 set at a Junior Olympics meet last summer.
Sometimes, you need to be a little bit more relaxed to have a big mark like that, Vacaville head coach Mike Papadopoulos said. She's such a solid kid, and she's in a good spot for this early in the year.
According to Vacaville assistant coach Mike Sullivan, French's toss ranks as the fourth-best in the state and seventh-best in the nation.
Tori Dickerson filled in for French and won the shot put.
Elizabeth Bokum added three individual wins, in the 880 yards, mile and 2-mile races.
