USATF Junior Championships
Boulder Colorado

Boulder, Colorado put on its most gentle winter face for the US XC Championships, & was rewarded with some sterling results. Jordan Hasay of California took an early lead & in spite of lacking training at altitude ran away with the race. She was initially chased by a pack of five runners that included former Footlocker champion Aislinn Ryan of the University of Colorado by way of NY, who won a XC race just a week ago, & Aurora Scott, who placed 2nd in the 2006 Footlocker race. Scott actually fell in what amounts to a ditch, which is commonly referred to as Jonesy's surprise but righted herself to qualify for the US team that will compete in Kenya next month.

For Jordan it was an impressive win. She essentially challenged everyone to stay with her & strolled to an facile victory. For some it would seem as redemption after failing to defend her Footlocker crown in December but that would be unfair, for early in last year's XC season she had admitted that the focus was this race & not Footlocker. In point of fact her father had admitted (just after Footlocker) that her training had been altered from the previous year with the USATF as the goal, noting he had feared that she was a little short, & shouldered the blame for the loss. That and a loss of sleep for a number of days may also have been a factor but it was clear that she was more than primed for this race.

The top 8 qualify for the World XC Championships.

Junior Men's Race 8K
The Junior men's race saw Elliott Heath of Minnesota, an unheralded high school runner, took control with 3 kilometer's to go surprising himself & most everyone else. Heath had been a Footlocker qualifier in 2006 placing 33rd. Placing 2nd was University of Oregon Freshman Kenny Klotz, who placed 4th in the 2005 Footlocker race. Klotz noted later that he felt well until they neared the end & the altitude probably caught up with him. Matt Tebo of New Mexico, who placed 5th in last year's Footlocker earned 3rd. The altitude was a factor for many including Oregon's A J Acosta, who dropped out of the race.
