Narrows League cross country participants have some time to prepare for the district meet.

But if Wednesday’s Narrows League cross country championships at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood was any indication, the champions at the district meet at American Lake Golf Course on Oct. 27 might be the same.

That’s because Gig Harbor’s Miles Unterreiner easily outlasted his competition to win the boys event in 15 minutes, 20.71 seconds.

He was followed by Wilson’s Kevin Rosaaen (15:40.13), Central Kitsap’s Shane Markowitz (15:53.05), Gig Harbor’s Conner Peloquin (16:08.24) and Olympia’s Colin O’Leary (16:10.25).

Gig Harbor also won the boys team competition with 36 points, followed by North Kitsap (88), South Kitsap (96), Central Kitsap (118), Olympia (129), Bellarmine Prep (132), Wilson (173) and Stadium (186).

The top 30 runners and six best teams qualified for districts in both the boys and girls competitions.

The storyline on the girls side was similar as Bellarmine Prep’s Nicole Cochran had little difficulty claiming first place. Cochran finished in 18:08.21. Gig Harbor’s Alyssa Andrews (18:24.15) was second, followed by Bellarmine Prep’s Kayla Evans (18:32.92), Gig Harbor’s Kate Stuart (18:42.20) and Olympia’s Annie Dear (18:47.41).

The Tides also won the girls team competition with 37 points. Bellarmine Prep was next (68), followed by North Kitsap (71), Olympia (108), Stadium (124), Central Kitsap (131), South Kitsap (213), Wilson (226) and Mount Tahoma (247).
