GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Union Catholic High School boys track & field team added the icing to its splendid season at the Nike Outdoor Nationals on Friday night, placing second in the sprint medley relay.
The Vikings clocked 3:27.36, just .06 behind winner Don Bosco Prep in a virtual repeat of their showdown at last month’s East Coast Relays.
Junior Garrett Ellis returned from a hamstring injury to post a 48.7-second 400 split and senior Brian Guterl added a 1:52.9 800 anchor for the Vikings, who recorded the 24 th-fastest time in state history and the fastest by a local team since Plainfield’s 3:24.8 in 1980.
Mike Suarez and Julian Phillips ran the 200-meter legs for Union Catholic.
In the boys 5000, Gill St. Bernard’s sophomore Doug Smith placed second in 14:40.76, just two seconds behind winner Adam Vess of Cromwell (Conn.). In the girls 5000, Ridge senior Nicol Traynor placed fifth in 17:31.97.
Two other local athletes earned medals with sixth-place finishes in Friday night’s action: Hillsborough senior Taryn O’Connor in the girls shot put (45-6.25) and Westfield junior Brandon Heroux in the boys javelin (an area-best 188-3).
