Cook Park

Cook Park was the scene again this year for the Tigard Invitational but the course was a bit different, as
they started the race this year on the soccer field, which is on the other side of the road from last year’s start.
The alteration in the course offered a bit more visibility for fans, although most of the race is beyond fan view
unless one is ready for some serious running. The course is flat and can yield fast times but the day was fairly
warm, although on a par with last year.
The girls varsity got the competition going first, which is especially appreciated by those of us who had to
travel to another meet the next day, and they raced down the soccer field en masse. The runners passed quickly from sight but, when they reappeared well after the mile mark. it was Hayley Gregoire of Beaverton in the lead.
Gregoire had battled Alyssa O’ Connor of Summit in last Saturday’s South Salem Invitational and that may have taken something out of her, as she did not really appear comfortable at any time in the race. Still to her credit she
was giving her best of that day and she held a sizable lead. Priscilla Timmons followed alone in second early and looked very composed as did South Salem’s Emily Weber. It is only fair to note that last year Jesuit competed
with their varsity runners in part because the football team was playing Tigard that night. Unknown to most was
the fact that the Jesuit varsity & first JV teams were traveling to South Whidbey for a meet in Washington on
Saturday. That in particular messed up the strategy of Franklin’s Joy Shufeldt, who had been instructed to go out
with Jesuit’s third runner. Joy, who is a fine runner & won the Canby Invitational last year, realized only after
hearing the mile time that something was amiss. She was well behind and had to spend the rest of the race playing catch-up.
Timmons took the lead midway through the race & cruised home to claim the victory with a time of 18:45, while Gregoire finished 2nd in 19:04. Emily Weber of South Salem finished third and looks to a runner, who will quickly improve. Joy Shufeldt passed a fair number of runners to claim 4th while Skyview’s Elise & julie Yoshioka earned 5th & 6th. Christina Anderson of Heritage took 7th and Courtney Hochstetler of South Salem edged Eliza Vestica of Aloha for 9th. Aouthridge’s Chloe Steinbeck finished 10th in 19:58.
In the team competition Skyview easily claimed the victory over South Salem 35 to 77. Southridge edged Franklin, although they tied in the scoring, when their 6th runner Eric Schultz placed 35th defeating her counterpart on Franklin.
In the boys’ race Jason Waldram of Aloha took an early lead over Cody Hughes of South Salem & drew away over the latter miles. His winning time of 15:58 was faster than Brian Manning’s time when he won last year. Kurtis Semph of Southridge edged Chase Horrocks of Skyview to claim third. Cesar jaimes-Perez, also from Southridge, edged young Ian Burgess of Franklin for fifth and Meagan Eschele & Johnny Panaccione of Southridge placed 7th & 8th. Dylan Hallums of Tigard was 9th just ahead of Patrick Brown of Southridge, who salted away the victory for his team.
In the team race Southridge easily won the title with 33 points while Tigard finished 2nd with 67. Franklin placed third with 110 while Jesuit managed to finish fourth with their third team - four points ahead of Skyview,
which had 129 points.
