Skye Childs, a senior at Leavenworth High, crossed off a major summer goal Saturday.

Competing at an AAU track meet over the weekend in Joplin, Mo., Childs placed first in the 100 meters and took silver in the 200 meters. Those two performances not only gave the Lady Pioneer two medals, but also secured her a spot in the upcoming 2012 AAU Junior Olympic Games.

“I never really thought that I would ever be trying out for something so big as the Junior Olympics,” Childs said. “I was just proud and really happy that I qualified.”

The 2012 AAU Junior Olympics will take place on July 30 through August 4 at Humble High School in Houston, Texas. Hundreds of athletes from around the country will compete for AAU gold, including top prep talent from the state of Kansas.

This will be Childs first trip.

“I’ll practice as hard as I can and do a few meets in between now and then to get ready,” the Leavenworth track star said. “I’m just glad I’m going and I will try my best.”
