On June 22, CLCF Panthers Track and Field team sent 21 athletes to Fitchburg, MA for the Junior Olympics. The Junior Olympics consist of ages 8 and under up to 18 year old athletes. The ages of the runners for the Panthers varied from as young as 7 and up to 14.
The highlights for the girls side were Tessa Almonacy, Kateri Bajer, Emily Pedro, and Michelle LaFargue. Tessa ran in the 11-12 group for the 400 meter finishing 6th with a personal best of 1:15.51. Kateri ran in the same race finishing 3rd with a time of 1:13.21, also her personal best. Young Emily Pedro competed in the long jump, 800 and 400 meter, qualifying for the regional meet in all. Her best jump was 9'9.75",her running times were 3:19.04 and 1:21.49 respectively. Michelle ran in the 100 meter and 100 meter hurdles, qualifying for the regional meet in the 100 meter race.
The highlights for the boys were Brady Highcove, Dylan Manning, Deondre Soares, and Deven Lenus. 7 year old Brady ran the 1500 and 400 finishing 5th in both. He also participated in the turbo jav, placing first with a throw of 33'11". Dylan ran in the 12-13 age group and was courageous enough to run the 100 meter hurdle and the 3000! He finished 5th and 7th respectfully. Deondre who ran with the 9-10 year olds did amazing as he placed 2nd in the 100, 4th in the 200, and 3rd in the long jump. Deven Lenus who tried the high jump for only the 3rd time, placed third. Matt Leavitt and his twin brother Zack qualified for several different events such as the 400, 3000, and more. David Pedro competing in his first JO, ran the 80 meter hurdles with a time of 18.96. Melissa Murphy ran a time of 1:13 in the 400 meters, one of best times this season.
In this meet, the top 8 runners qualify for the regional meet which is being held on Randall Island, NY. On this day over 200 runners competed for a chance to move on to Randall Island. Congratulations to all the athletes that competed on this hot summer day!
