The Stratford High boys cross country team began practice on Monday, after spending most of last week at a running camp in Huntsville.
Stratford will host its home invitational on Oct. 8 at George Bush Park.
The Spartans anticipate a much stronger varsity this year as the team returns two seniors and the rest juniors and sophomores.
With the incoming sophomores coming off a very successful track season, the team will be vying for a spot in the top two at district as a team and a spot in the top three at the regional meet.
“This year’s camp enabled the boys to bond together and get to know each other, Spartans coach Tony Brillon said. A strong team bond is essential for a team to make it to the next level. We were able to go over various topics as nutrition, hydration, etc.”
This year’s team returning seniors are Sullivan Barnes and James Broussard. Both had a very successful track season and are expected to provide much needed leadership. The majority of the team will be comprised of sophomores: Pearce Cash, Francisco Lara, Brian Quinlan, Walker Wichmann and Tim Tirado. Junior Ricardo Coria will also look to break into the top sevenh.
“Our goal is to get in the top three at the district and regional meets, Brillon said. A lot will depend on how well last year’s freshmen progress as they move into Varsity. These freshmen did very well last year, but varsity is different….and they know it.
