Staten Island’s youth track and field stars - West Brighton’s Zivi Magenheim, and the Island Express quartet of William Cuthbertson, Oadhan Lynch, Zachery Henriquez and Patrick McGarty - will begin their journey south Wednesday to compete in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T University, in Greensboro, N.C.
Sixteen regions will take part in the seven-day meet, while competition will be conducted in six age groups.
For Magenheim, he will be making his second appearance on an outdoor national stage, finishing 31st last year in the 9-10-year old javelin with a mark of 66 feet, 11 inches at Morgan State University, in Baltimore.
The diminutive 11-year-old qualified in two events earlier in the month at the Region I Championships - Icahn Stadium, Randall’s Island - placing fourth in the 11-12s 80-meter hurdles with a personal best of 16.20 seconds; and fifth in the long jump with a best of 14-7¾.
For the Island Express foursome of Cuthbertson (Port Richmond), Lynch (Pleasant Plains), Henriquez (West Brighton) and McGarty (Westerleigh) they will be making their national debut, qualifying in the 13-14 4x400-meter relay with a Region I second-place time of 4:16.49.
