ROADRUNNERS DOMINATE ROADRACES AND QUALIFY FOR USATF AGE GROUP NATIONALS

The Southern California Roadrunners have been dominant the fast few months running several road races the last few months with many PRs and with some wins.

In March the team competed at the Arrowhead Regional Medical center community 5k run . Austin Tamagno was the third overall finisher with a PR of 17:35. Trevor Capestany was 4th overall with a PR of 17:59 and Zafir Abou Zamzam 5th overall with 18:14. Moriah Munyan was the first female finisher running 19:38 with Claire Graves second overall with 19:53.

On April 2nd the team competed at the Junior Carlsbad youth 1 mile races for youth 12 and under. Phillip Rocha set the course record for in the 12 year old division for males and Claire Graves wth first 12 yo female in 5:28. Jack Keough Lansford won the 8 year old race with a PR of 5:43.

The Team competed at the Carlsbad 5000 the following day. In the 29-under race several PR's were achieved in that age division race with 1242 competitors. Phillip Rocha placed 30th overall with a PR of 16:49 and 1st in his 12-under age group. Austin Tamagno ran a PR of 17:39. James Lindstrom ran a PR of 17:41 and Zafir Abou Zamzam ran a PR of 17:57 for 2nd in his age group. Claire Graves ran a PR of 18:14 to win the 12-under female age group. Moriah Munyan ran 19:53. Noah Tamagno ran 20:24.

On April 10th, the team competed at the Run Through Redlands. 5 of the 6 individual winners of the 5k , 10k or half Marathon are current or alumni of the team. Individual winners were defending champions Hannah Valenzuela in the 5k, Claire Graves in the 10k in 40 minutes for a PR , Pete Sturtevant in the half marathon and setting a new course record. Jharynd Cecil won the mens 10k and multi 5k winner as an age grouper Jayme (Ambos) Daniel won the women half marathon. On May 7th the team competed at the third annual Run with the Panthers 5k hosted by the Corona Panthers at the Promenade shops of Dos Lagos. Claire Graves won her third straight title there and resetting a new course record there and a new PR of 17:57 on the 5k course. The team won the team competition of scoring the 5 fastest runners ahead of the Panthers , the South Orange county Wildcats and many running clubs. There were 22 clubs scoring. The top 5 on the team scoring were Gengyzkan Martinez, (2nd 16:24), Phillip Rocha 5th overall (1st AG 16:45 PR), Austin Tamagno 7th overall ( 17:10 PR), Trevor Capestany (17:37 PR) and Claire Graves (1st F OA 17:57 PR). Other members of the A team included Jonathan Jimenez with a PR of 18:26. Noah Tamagno in 20:02, Connor Taylor in 20:17 for a big PR. Danny Castro won his age group and was a member of the team

All the girls ran well running prs and finishing well. Alexa Zamora was 5th overall and 1st in Age group with a PR of 20:37. Kessy Uribes was 7th overall and 2nd in AG behind Claire with PR of 21:56. Olivia Paez ran a PR for 8th overall in 22:18. Morgan Taylor was 14th OA female with a PR of 23:09 and close behind with a PR was Natalie Penaloza in 23:17. Boys running prs included Tyler Adame in 22:14 and Chris Isaacs with the same time.

Michael Lowrie had a big spring road race season having been features in LA sports and Fitness magazine of the May/ June edition. This can be seen on page 10. Michael recently won the Rescue 5k held in Upland the past 2 weeks with Jack Keough Lansford third overall. Moriah Munyan was the first female in the Bunny Run in Apple Valley.

On the track the Roadrunners continued to do well and several have qualified to compete at the USATF Youth Track and Field National championships to be held in Myrtle Beach , South Carolina in late June through July 3rd.

Phillip Rocha and Tony Parks competed in the Imani Race with Phillip taking first with a PR of 2:11 and Tony first in heat and second overall with a PR of 2:16.

The Roadrunners competed at the Rising Stars Invitational on April 16th running the 3000 meters or the 4 x800 meter relay. Kessy Uribes won the Midget girls 3000 and Claire Graves won the Youth girls 3000 meters. The highlight of the day was the Youth boys 4x800 relay in which both the A and B teams qualified to compete in the Nationals. Trevor led the A team with a 2:14.1 leg (PR) with Jonathan Jimenez (2:17.5PR) the B team . Tony Parks was the A team second runner (2:20.0 ) Austin Tamagno (2:19.8) the third leg and Phillip Rocha anchored with a 2:10.9 PR as the A team clocked 9:04.8. The B team ran well with Xolan Brown the number 2 runner with 2:19.1 , Zafir Abou Zamzam (2:31.0) just finishing the 3k, and Andrew Wilson anchoring as the team qualified with 9:34..9. The national time standard is 9:52.48 for Youth boys.

The team competed at the 8th annual San Diego So Cal Roadrunners invitational held at Orange Glen Hs in Escondido on April 23rd. Many PRs were set and several national standards were achieved with more athletes qualifying. Natalie Penaloza qualified for the Bantam girls Turbo Javelin and Mikey Leong qualified in the Bantam boys turbo javelin. Mickaela Penaloza placed 2nd in the Midget girls Turbo javelin just missing the qualifying mark and just a few seconds in the 1500 m race walk.

Many PRs were set in the Youth Boys races as some of the top times in the country were set in thses races. The 1500 meter races was exciting as 2 of the top kickers in the country battled the final 200 meters. Phillip Rocha ran a 11 second PR for second place with 4:19.54. Jeremiah Bias just returned to training placed 4th with 4:33.57 and Austin Tamagno running a PR of 4;34.59. Alexis Gonzalez and Jonathan Jimenez ran prs of 4:47.85 and 4:47.98 respectively. The 800 m race had many fast times as the leader led the race with a 61 400. Phillip ran 62 but caught the leader with 200 to go and finishing with a Nation leading time of 2:05 82 for a PR and 1st. Jeremiah Bias ran a PR of 2:13.58. Austin ran a PR for 2:17.50 and Jonathan a pr for the open 800 with 2:19.48.

At the Long Beach Sprinters Invitational Claire won the YG 3000 meters by 17 seconds and Trevor Capestany won the YB 1500 with a PR of 4:34. Jasmine Alexander ran a PR of 5:53 in the Bantam girls 1500 just short of the 5:48 standard to qualify for nationals.

Hannah Valenzuela ran a PR of 4:42.9 at the Occidental Invitational for a PR on May 7th. Dustin Fay ran a pr of 14:22 in the 5000 meters at the same meet. Daniel Rosales ran 15:07 for a pr.

The team will begin focusing on track events rather than road races the next 2 months.
