The Southern California Roadrunners competed at the 2014 USATF National Track and Field championships held at Robert Haugh Track and Field Complex at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana. The Event took place over 6 days from June 24-29. The team took 14 athletes of which 12 were rookies to Track and field Nationals. The team brought home 26 medals including 7 gold , 5 silver and 1 bronze. The top 8 in each race were awarded medals. There were qualifying standards the athletes must achieve prior to competing at the meet. The Roadrunners had over 25 athletes qualify but only the 14 chose to compete.


Jennifer Lopez (Redlands) age 10 won the 1500 meter race walk the first day of competition. The event was marred by rain and thunderstorms. During the 1st attempt of the race the athletes had to stopped competing after the race was half over due to a lightening strike near by and the stadium was evacuated for 30 minutes. The race was eventually restarted after several restarts and cancellations due to other lightening strikes. After 90 minute from the 1st attempt of the race Jennifer won the 10-11 1500 racewalk with a PR of 9:19.11. Gladys Santiago (San Gabriel Valley) placed 8th overall for a medal in the 11-12 age group with 10:41.85.


Day 2 of competition for the team was the 4x800 meter relays. The 13-14 girls team consisiting of Lindsay Calderon (Apple Valley), Alyssa Segovia (Alta Loma), Chloe Leong (Rowland Heights) and Olivia Paez (West Covina) easily won with a tiime of 10:13.68 for the teams first Girls National championship 4x800 relay team. The boys 13-14 team battled with the South Orange County Wildcats placing 2nd place overall with a time of 8:53.06. The team consisted Jesus Guzman, Alberto Gonzalez, Kevin Leyva Ramos and Isaias Ramirez all from Riverside.

Day 3 was the 15-16 boys 3000 meter run final. Erik Gonzalez placed 3rd overall with a time of 9:16.37. 800 meter qualifying heats were run with only the top 8 qualifying for finals. Lindsay Calderaon just missed qualifying placing 9th overall with 2:31.92. Guadulupe Perez (San Gabriel Valley) placed 14th overall with 2:35.36 in the 13-14 age group. The boys qualified 2 runners for finals with Jesus Guzman placing 2nd in heat 1 with 2:10.52 for 5th fastest qualifier. Isaias Ramirez ran a PR of 2:06.83 to win heat 2 and finishing with the fastest qualifying time for the 13-14 boys age group. Jennifer Lopez finished the day adding another medal placing 2nd in the javelin throw for the 9-10 girls ager group with a PR of 18.07 meters (59’3”).

Day 4 was 1500 meter qualifying rounds for the 13-14 and older age groups. The 13-14 girls qualified 5 runners for finals with each among the top 12 to move to the final days final. Olivia Paez wone heat 1 with 4:58.67. Guadalupe Perez and Lyndsay Calderon finished 4th and 6th in the same heat with times of 5:14.39 and 5:24.22. Heat 2 Alyssa Segovia ran a PR of 5:09.27 to take 3rd and Chloe Leong placed 6th with 5:25.07 as the final qualifier. The 13-14 boys qualified 3 for the finals . In heat 1 Jesus Guzman ran 4:29.51 for 2nd with Kevin Ramos Leyva 7th with 4:32.74 to qualify. Alberto Gonzalez placed 9th in heat 1 with 4:47.70. In heat 2 Isaias Ramirez ran another PR winning in 4:16.95. Miguel Rodriguez placed 11th with 4:55.68.


Day 5 Rain returned during the 3000 meter final races. Gladys Santiago placed 14th in the 11-12 girls division with Trevor Benson (San Gabriel Valley) placing 13th in the 11-12 boys race. Olivia Paez took the lead at lap 2 and did not look back as she won the 13-14 girls 3000 meters to  get her 2nd gold medal of the meet. Her time was 10:39.82. Alyssa Segovia picked up her 2nd medal placing 6th overall with 11;22.94 for a PR. Chloe Leong placed 8th with 11:43.22 to get her second medal of the meet. Guadulupe Perez placed 9th overall just missing a medal.  The Roadrunners continued their winning ways as Isaias Ramirez took the lead at lap 3 and did not relinquish the lead and running a PR of 9:17.22 for his 1st National championship. Kevin Leyva Ramos ran a PR in the same race placing 5th with 9:30.26. Jesus Guzman placed 8th with 9:39.87. Miguel Rodriguez and Alberto Gonzalez placed 17th and 18th in the 24 runner field.  800 finals were run in the afternoon . Isaias and Jesus placed 5th and 8th with 2:11.73 and 2:15.99 with the 800 final their 5th race in 4 days.

Day 6 were the 1500 finals. Jennifer Lopez ran a PR of 5:39.59 for her 3rd medal of the meet for 8th overall in the 9-10 girls 1500 meter final. Gladys Santiago placed 18th in the 11-12 girls 1500 meters with 6:37.92. Trevor Benson placed 14th in the 11-12 boys 1500 meter run with 5:23.13. Olivia Paez earned her 3rd medal of the meet taking 4th overall in the 13-14 girls 1500 meters. Lindsay Calderon placed 8th for her 2nd medal of the meet with 5:09.64. Alyssa Segovia was close behind in 9th with 5:09.66. Guadulupe Perez and Chloe Leong placed 11th and 12th in the same final. Iron men Isaias Ramirez and Jesus Guzman ran their 6th race of the meet over a 5 day period placing 4th and 8th with times of 4:23.48 and 4:27.05 PR winning 4 medals during competition. Kevin Ramos Leyva placed 11th with 4:32.06. Erik Gonzalez placed 7th overall in the 15-16 boys 1500 meter run with 4:17.30. The 13-14 boys team with 5 distance runners finished in third place in team scoring for their age group.

 The Roadrunners have concluded their track season and now have begun training for the upcoming cross country season. The Team currently meets at Aurantia Park Mondays and Wednesday at 6pm in Highland off Greenspot road. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hulda Crooks park in Loma Linda.
