Anna Maxwell has been representing San Lorenzo Valley High School throughout her track and field career. The incoming senior will now represent USA in July.

Maxwell finished in second place in the 1,500 meters at the World Youth Track & Field Trials in Edwardsville, Ill., on Wednesday, recording a qualifying time of 4 minutes, 25.93 seconds to advance to the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ukraine.

"I'm super-excited. It's a cool opportunity," Maxwell said. "This is totally going to be a new experience."

The meet will take place in Donetsk, Ukraine, from July 10-14.

"She's big time," said Rob Collins, Maxwell's track coach. "She's going to represent the United States and wear the Team USA uniform."

Maxwell was second to Alexa Efraimson of Washington, who finished in 4:23.12.

"I knew she was going to go out fast," Maxwell said of Efraimson. "I was going to go out hard and make it a good race."

The two broke away from the pack early and made it a two-person race. Maxwell said it was a similar experience to her championship race in the 1,600 at the CIF state finals -- only Wedneday's race was a bit faster.

Maxwell's runner-up finish was enough to qualify her for the world championships in Ukraine, but her time easily met the qualifying mark of 4:36 as well. Collins said Maxwell was also chosen as one of the top 20 female athletes by a selection committee.

Maxwell is expected to return to California on Thursday. She'll then report back to Illinois for training camp on June 29 before departing for Ukraine on July 4.
