Eight youth track and field athletes from Oregon were crowned regional champions last week, and have qualified to compete at the Hershey's Track and Field Games North American Finals in Hershey, Pa., Aug. 7.

The list includes Rafael Sibony of Seaside, who qualified for nationals in the boys age 9-10 200 meters. Also qualifying was Jacob LaCoste of Albany.

Each of the eight athletes qualified for nationals by winning their event at a local meet, then by posting the best time or distance mark at the Oregon State Finals held July 10 at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Sibony ran a 30.77 in the 200, and LaCoste jumped 8 feet, 10 3/4 inches in the standing long jump.

Their times/distance marks were then compared to the other times/distances within the Northwest region and the best marks in each event and age group were selected for the national finals.

The Northwest region consists of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.

In addition to competing at the national track meet, the all-expense paid trip includes a tour of the world famous Hershey's Chocolate factory and a day at the Hershey's Amusement Park.
