Regional Junior Olympics draws area athletes

ROCKWALL - Rockwall-area track clubs have 57 athletes competing in 81 events this week at the 2012 USATF Region 12 Junior Olympic Outdoor Championships at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

The Region 12 competition hosts qualifiers from the Southwestern, South Texas, West Texas and Gulf Association Meets and runs from Tuesday through Saturday.

The event is the final qualifier for the 2012 USATF National Junior Olympics to be held at Hughes Stadium on the Morgan State University campus in Baltimore, Maryland from July 23rd-July 29th.

The Top-5 finishers in each event at the regional championships earn berths to the 46th National Junior Olympic Championships.

The Rockwall Mustang qualifiers competing at Lubbock include 24 athletes in 34 events, including eight individual Southwestern Association gold medalists and the Midget Boys 4X800 Relay, seven silver medalists plus the Bantam Girls 4X400 Relay and the Midget Boys 4X400 Relay and three individual bronze medalists plus the Midget Boys 4X100 Relay.

The Texas Titans have four Southwestern Association gold medalists, four individual silver medalists plus the Young Men’s 4X800 Relay and two bronze medal winners leading the way in Lubbock.

Leading Club Vaultitude at the Region 12 Championships are 17 qualifiers in 18 events, including two Southwestern Association gold medalists, two silver medal winners and four bronze medalists.
