Napa High senior-to-be Claire Pirio and 2013 American Canyon High graduate Shyanne West qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships by finishing first and second, respectively, in the heptathlon in the 17-18 girls age division in last weekend’s USA Track & Field Region 14 qualifying meet in Rocklin.

The top two finishers in each age group are eligible for the nationals, set July 22-28 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.

Pirio competed for the Napa Track Club at the Region 14 meet - which had athletes from all of northern and central California - and scored a personal-best total of 3,625 points in the seven events. That topped the 3,437 she put up last year, when she won the 15-16 age group.

West competed unattached.

Pirio was the Most Valuable Athlete of the Napa High girls track and field team in both 2012 and 2013, and the Monticello Empire League high jump champion this season.
