Temperatures soared in the middle of the country this week, but that didn't stop Amir Patterson from medaling at the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Wichita, Kan., on Thursday.

The Crespi Carmelite High School student finished third place and set a personal record in the intermediate boys discus event with a toss of 150'9. It was over eight feet farther than his previous best of 142'5.

Wichita reached a record 111 degrees Wednesday, where nearly 7,000 athletes participated in the championships.

Patterson, 15, will participate in the 12-pound shot put competition Friday afternoon and the javelin on Saturday. He then plans to head to New Orleans for the AAU Junior Olympics next wee
