Pioneers’ depth too much for Cougars in league opener last Wednesday

OREGON CITY - The Canby track and field team was swept by Oregon City in the Three Rivers League opener last Wednesday at Pioneer Stadium.

The Canby boys fell, 105-40, and the girls team lost 87-58.

On the boys side, the Cougars won five events, including four in the running events.

Junior Thomas Sutherland was victorious in the 200 meters in 23.33 seconds, which marked a personal best.

Junior Cody Britt won the 400 in 54.49, junior Dane Jones placed first in the 800 with a personal best time of 2:04.27, and senior Ben Edwards won the 3,000 at 10:18.81.

Senior Jesus Chaparro won the pole vault for Canby with a mark of 10 feet.

On the girls side, sophomore Lauren Morgan swept the 100 and 200. Morgan won the 100 in 13.30, and earned a personal best in the 200 at 26.98.

Junior Elizabeth Hintz won the 800 at 2:47.81.

Canby swept both relays as the 4x100 relay of Morgan, sophomore Karley Baggerly, junior Brittany Gillespie and senior Teri Gent won in 50.91; and the 4x400 relay consisting of the same quartet won in 4:20.14.

Senior Tineke Bierma won the high jump at 5-2 and Baggerly won the other field event in the long jump at 15-11 1/2.

Up next, Canby hosts Lake Oswego on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Cougar Stadium.

The Cougars are looking for their first victory during the league dual season.
