The Opelika Cross Country teams traveled to Spain Park on Saturday for the Spain Park Invitational, and senior Cordarryl Whitehead came away with his second win in as many races.

The varsity boys’ race was led almost from start to finish by Whitehead, who ran the 5K course in 17:00, just two seconds off the course record.

Junior Shakiel Parker also ran a great race, finishing seventh at 17:51. James Ray Thrash, Kane Barrett and Ben Bryant all scored, giving the Opelika Varsity boy’s team a third-place finish out of 17 teams.

The varsity girls were led by sophomore Emma Garner’s second-place finish (20:47). Sophomore Tanishya Jones had a great race as well, finishing 19th (22:37). The varsity girls only had four runners, thus not qualifying for the team competition.

The Opelika Middle School boys also had a third-place finish out of 14 teams.

Rohman Clarke led the OMS boys with a fourth place finish (11:49) in the 2 mile race.  Kevin Lazenby ran a 12:10 to place 12th overall. Ben Garner had a top-20 finish as well, coming in at 18th (12:36). Keyshawn Shaw and Will Overstreet also had great finishes to score for Opelika.

The OMS girls had a 10th-place finish as a team, and they were led by 15th-place finisher Brittany Golden (14:15). Adrianna Anthony, Emma Royal, Rachel Sharma and Sarah Brewer all scored for the OMS girl’s team.

The OHS and OMS cross country teams will be in action again this Saturday. Opelika is hosting its first ever Cross Country meet on September 24th at the Opelika Sportsplex
