Sugar Land resident Octavia Gee heaved a personal record 28 feet, 5 ¾ inches in the shot put at the Region 16 Junior Olympic Championships, June 14 at Barnett Stadium. That mark easily won the gold medal in the girls 8-and-under division and would have set both USATF and AAU Junior Olympic records.
Gee, 8, proved that effort was not an aberration two weeks later. She won both the shot put and javelin at the AAU Primary Nationals, July 4-6 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida.
The shot put was a race for second after Gee’s throw of 26-9 ¾ shattered the previous meet record of 22-10. The runner-up threw 18-8 ¼.
In the javelin, Gee was one of two girls to break the meet record of 42-4. But her 52-7 held up as the gold standard, winning by more than six feet.
Last year, Gee won the bronze medal in the shot put with a throw of 20-1 ½ at the AAU Junior Olympics. If she maintains her recent form, she could add a USATF Junior Olympic championship to her resume July 21-27 at Turner Stadium in Humble.
