Westside’s girls and North Whitfield’s boys ran to the team titles Thursday in the Whitfield County Middle School League Championships at Edwards Park.
The two-mile races were the third local event sponsored this season by Carpet Capital Running Club.
The boys individual champion was sixth-grader Jessie Martinez of Gladden, who finished in 12:56 - the only runner who came in under the 13-minute mark.
In the girls competition, Westside finished with 27 points to edge North Whitfield, which finished with 28. The victorious Lady Rockets got scoring runs from individual champion Ashley Sweeney (14 minutes, 45 seconds), Jen Rivera, Katie Thompson, Reagan Guess and Annalise Enroe.
North Whitfield’s points were supplied by Morgan King, Hayley Hight, Rachel Ward, Bethany Goodwin and Lexa Dawn. New Hope, which was third with 102 points, got scoring runs from Aubrey Young, Emily Baggett, Zara Quarles, Cheayenne Quarles and Hailey Ogle.
In the boys competition, North Whitfield finished with 33 points to come out ahead of Westside’s 46. The Pioneers’ top runners were J.R. Laird, Walt Douglas, Ty Pendley, Will Douglas and Zach Williams.
Westside’s scoring runs came from Luke Stevens, Jacob Asbury, Andrew Ashe, Adrian Fraire and Nery Garcia, while New Hope’s 92 points were supplied by Kyle Roberts, Carson Brock, Scottie Quarles, Barrett Upton and Jacob Splawn.
