North Central High School senior Futsum Zeinasellassie was named the 2011-12 Gatorade National Boys Cross-Country Runner of the Year in a surprise ceremony at the school on Thursday. Zeinasellassie is a three-time state champion in cross-country and the 3,200 meters
“This is a amazing,” Zeinasellassie said. “I can’t put it into words.
“I’m really appreciative for ESPN and Gatorade. I won the state Gatorade award but I didn’t think about the national award. I thought it was out of my league.”
Zeinasellassie set a course record in the Nike national meet in Portland, Ore. and then finished second by one second in the Foot Locker cross-country nationals in San Diego in December.
