Daniel Salgado and Garett Faulkender, representing the Maverick Express summer track team, qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in Omaha.

During the recent Florida national qualifier at Dade Christian School in Miami Lakes, Faulkender, a Pembroke Pines resident, was second in the 5,000-meter run in 18 minutes 18 seconds.

Salgado, a Davie resident, won the 400 hurdles in 57.45 seconds and was third in the 200 dash in 23.74.

Both also compete for Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, under the direction of Joel Ballantyne who also coaches the Maverick Express.

WEST PINES TEAM DOES WELL IN MIAMI

The West Pembroke Pines Optimist track and field team did well at the AAU Florida Gold Coast District Qualifier at Dade Christian School in Miami Lakes.

The top 10 athletes in each event qualified for the AAU Region 4 state finals in Winter Park.

The top 4 winners in each event at the state finals advance to the AAU National Junior Olympics in Detroit.

West Pines had 14 qualify for the state finals. At districts, they won 14 medals -- two gold, four silver and eight bronze medals.

Girls: Bantam: Shanell Atkins, first in shot put, fourth in 100-meter run. Midget: Kendal Ellis, second in 200-meter run and 80-meter hurdles, third in 400. Sub-Midget: Amber Hopkins, fourth in 100, eighth in 200 and 400. Sub-Youth: Shyanyne Pottinger-Wood, third in 100 hurdles, ninth in 800. Youth: Tonise Messam, fourth in long jump, sixth in 100 hurdles, seventh in 800.

Boys: Bantam: Tyler Muraida, first in 1,500, fourth in long jump, sixth in 800. Midget: Ibraham Dodo, third in long jump, fourth in 80 hurdles, 10th in 400. Warren Gibbs, second in discus, fourth in shot put. Rasheed Tatham, fifth in 80 hurdles, eighth in 800. Sub-Midget: Paul Brown, third in discus, fifth in shot put. Sub-Youth: Khristopher Hampton, fourth in 1,500, sixth in 800. Youth: Arman Hall, third in 400, fifth in 200, third in long jump and 100 hurdles. Jeremy Tatham, third in 200, fifth in 400, second in long jump, fifth in 100 hurdles. Myles Gregory, seventh in 100, 10th in 400 and long jump.
