LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Liberty Junior High cross country runner Lukas Verzbicas is No. 1 in the nation.
The Liberty eighth-grader, who won the IESA state championship earlier this season, was the top runner in the Junior Olympics held at Rim Rock Farm on the Kansas University campus.
Verzbicas won the 4,000-meter run with a time of 13:14 in the 13-14 age group. That was 14 seconds better than the second-place finisher.
There are many rolling hills and some steep hills, Verzbicas said. I trained very hard and put in a lot of mileage for this race. I was glad that I did. This was a college course and very difficult.
