Marcus Cheema, a third-grade student from Westwood’s Berkeley Elementary School received the USA Track and Field New Jersey Award for Junior Olympic Athlete of the Year in 2011 (Sub-Bantam distance) on Jan. 21 at the Pines Manor in Edison. He practiced with Westwood Track & Field (recreation program) last spring and took part in the New Jersey Striders meets held in northern New Jersey. He runs the 1500 m, 800 m and 400 m. Cheema participated in the USATF New Jersey Junior Olympics in Asbury Park last June and stood first in the 1500 m, second in the 800 m and fourth in the 400 m. He progressed to the Regional Meet in Pennsylvania and also stood first in the 1500 m, second in the 800 m and sixth in the 400 m. Then at the USATF Nationals held at Wichita, Kan. in July he was ranked sixth in the 1500 m with his personal best timing of 5:44:22. Cheema will join Westwood Track and Field again this year for the spring season.
