Lane Austell is congratulated by his father, Steve Austell, after winning the decathlon event at the New Balance National Track and Field Championships.
Briarcrest senior Lane Austell presented his dad a great Father's Day gift by winning the decathlon at the 2011 New Balance National Track and Field Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
Formerly the Nike National Championships, this meet brings together many of the most elite high school athletes from around the country. The win introduced Lane to the national stage of track and field competition, where he is now ranked sixth in the nation in the decathlon in his age group.
It was a lot of fun. I was honored to be competing against such good athletes, said Austell. Winning it was a dream come true.
Since summer break began, Lane has been working out three times a day to prepare for this intense two-day competition. Upon return to Memphis, his rigorous training schedule resumed in preparation for his next competition, the National AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, which will be held at the end of the month.
