The Kodiak boys cross country team picked up right where they left off last year, while the girls turned in a stellar performance in the first meet of the year.

Trevor Dunbar captured first place, while the boys raced to a meet victory against Wasilla, Palmer and Colony at Colony High School Tuesday night.

The girls swept the first three spots with Abby Reed, Chloe Ivanoff and Brianna Gibbs.

Due to a computer malfunction by the scorekeeper at the race, Kodiak head coach Marcus Dunbar did not know what place the girls team got.

Reed finished the 2,600-meter (half of a 5K) course in 10 minutes and 4 seconds. Ivanoff was one second behind Reed, while Gibbs was four seconds back.

We have never had three front-runners like we have running now for the girls, Marcus Dunbar said.

Trevor Dunbar completed the course in 7:45 to finish ahead of Palmer’s Jake Parisien in rainy conditions.

Trevor won it pretty easily against some pretty good competition, Dunbar said.

Sam Salus was the next Kodiak finisher in fifth place with a time of 8:26.

Rounding out the top five for Kodiak was: Benny Garcia (8th, 8:38), Colton Cubbedge (11th, 8:49) and Dylan Anthony (12th, 8:50).

It looks like the boys are off to a good season, Marcus Dunbar said.

Dunbar was impressed with Cubbedge’s and Anthony’s performance.

KHS alumni Cory Pena won the community race, with another KHS alumni Steven Gauna placing second.
