Kira Larson came into the indoor track and field season with tired legs. After all, the Fargo North sophomore just completed a long, grinding, bruise-inducing basketball season that finished with an improbable Spartans state title. However, there was still more than enough spring in her step on Friday. Larson broke the 24-year-old North Dakota Class A state indoor championships meet high jump record with a height of 5 feet, 7 at the Bison Sports Arena. “I didn’t do so hot this time last year,” Larson said. “But I’m happy with the outcome. I’m surprised it happened.” Larson, who earned the Class A state outdoor high jump title as an eighth-grader, had only a handful of days of track practice due to the lengthy run of the North basketball team. The team’s leading scorer and rebounder, she was battered and bruised from a season spent crashing to the hardwood time and time again. Then an illness gave her one day of high jumping prior to Friday’s meet. There wasn’t much rust. Larson nailed the record leap on her first attempt. She broke the previous mark of 5-6 set in 1987 by Grand Forks Red River’s Wendy Kinneburg.

“To be honest, I just wanted to get a state qualifying height,” Larson said. “State qualifying is 5-1. I thought I could get that, and if I just got that I would have been fine. I started making it, and making it and making it and I was a little surprised.” Larson leaped 5-9 during the regular season last year, a mark believed to be the best Class A high jump in state history. She also broke the 21-year-old East Region meet record by clearing 5-8. But Larson finished third at state with a mark of 5-3.

“I’m in pretty good shape, but basketball shape and track shape are quite a bit different,” Larson said. “It will take a little bit before I’m in track shape. But (basketball) definitely helps so that I’m not coming in from nothing.” Fargo South senior Brock Larson was in his element Friday. The North Dakota State recruit set a new meet pole vault record in front of his future coaches and teammates with a height of 15-2. Bison track and field athletes and coaches helped run the event.

“I was hoping to get 15, and I got that,” said Brock, whose vault eclipsed former South standout Joe Plencer’s mark of 15-1 set in 2005. “So I’m happy with it. … If I can perfect all the little stuff, then the bigger heights will come.” Larson has won back-to-back Class A pole vault titles. Last year, he cleared 15 feet to earn the crown. He set a personal best of 15-7 during last season’s East/West Classic. He said he’s hoping to reach 16 feet this year with minor tweaks throughout the season. And that mark could be more attainable than ever following offseason shoulder surgery. Larson said he now has full range of motion in his arm, a luxury he didn’t have as he helped the Bruins football team to the Class 3A state title this season. He’s also pain free for the first time in awhile. “It feels a lot better,” Larson said.
