It was the Neenah invite, one of the more important meets of the year. Some of our biggest rivals were there (like Stevens Point, Marquette, and Neenah). This would be a good test to see if we were as good as we thought. As the team and I were warming up we knew we had a good chance at winning this meet, but watching our boys JV team get crushed (they ended up taking 4th) we all kind of thought we underestimated the teams. It was a hot day. Everyone's times were at least 20 seconds slow on JV. It cooled off a little, so we would hopefully have a decent race.
Throughout the race I felt good. I thought I would get my personal best but ended up 8 seconds off. I was not pleased with my result. In the end the whole team did alright. We ended up winning the meet. After that meet we were ranked number 1 in the state. Making us a top contending team. Before the season we were not even in the top 10.
Our team trained harder than ever through the summer. With most of our varsity runners running about 40 miles per week and going to a cross country camp (hosted by UW-Oshkosh). Some of the runners (Our two best guys) even went to two camps (the other camp was hosted by UW-Madison). Kimberly’s top runner (Nick Rink) is in the race to taking first at state. Not only that we also have our second and third runners (Derek Rink and Isaac Benz) have chances to be top 20 at state.
Nick Rink our top runner was told by several coaches that he has a chance to receive a scholarship. Also Derek Rink his twin brother who is right behind him also has a chance to get some great scholarships. Our newest edition to the team is Rowen Ellenberg. A freshman who already has broken 17 minutes and it’s still mid-season. He is looking to be the best freshman in the state this year for cross country.
Our team and the coaches want to meet our goal of being first at state, but even if we do not do that we want to be the best team in Kimberly high school history (Which is 5th at state). We are all looking forward to the Janesville meet, which is like an in season state. We are all very excited for this year.
