Z3 Junior Elite Team Holds Off Southeast Junior Team
Brian Gorman led Z3 to the relay win at the USA Triathlon Junior & Youth National Championship on Sunday in Chula Vista, Calif. (Rich Cruse/USA Triathlon) CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The all South Dakota team of Tamara Gorman, Tony Smoragiewicz and Brian Gorman won the fast-paced mixed relay event at the 2011 USA Triathlon Junior & Youth National Championship on Sunday at Chula Vista Harbor.
The trio from Rapid City, who all live within five minutes of each other and compete for the Iowa-based Z3 Junior Elite Team, train together every day.
Tamara Gorman, who won the Youth Elite National Championship on Saturday, led off the relay by staying close to Multisport Madness' Kelly Whitley, the previous day's Junior Elite National Champion. Smoragiewicz posted a blistering 3 minute, 35 second run and Brian Gorman had a solid leg on the 250m swim/5k bike/1.2k run super-sprint course to hold off a charging Hunter Honeycutt of the Southeast Junior Team and finish with a total time of 49 minutes, 49 seconds.
Truthfully, I didn't know if it was going to happen, but we pulled it out, Brian Gorman said. I hammered it as hard as I could on the bike to try and get a good lead, and then on the run the first step to last step was pretty much a dead sprint.
The Southeast Junior Team of Johanna Gartman, Luke Farkas and Hunter Honeycutt placed second in 50:00. The TriJuniors squad of Ellie Abrahmson, Ben Kanute and Connor Torre placed third in 50:31. Kanute's relay split of 15:04 was the fastest of the day by 41 seconds.
The team relay is one of the most exciting parts of triathlon today, said Tim Yount, who is USA Triathlon's Chief Operating Officer and has been with the organization 22 years and witnessed first-hand the development of new programs like the team relay. The relay is in a format that if we see it in the Olympic Games, will draw people in.
Also on Sunday, USA Triathlon also announced the Development Team National Champions. San Diego was the third and final development team event to count in the standings for 2011. The Multisport Madness Triathlon Team won the season title with 197 points. The Southeast Regional Junior Team was second with 189 points and the Z3 Junior Elite Team was third with 164 points.
