Atlanta’s 800m State Champion Chris Ibarra was invited to run nationally against other champions from 11 different states in Albuquerque, New Mexico in early June. Ibarra won fourth place in the event and was invited to compete against the nation’s best again in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Atlanta High School senior Chris Ibarra has been pretty busy this summer. While other kids take a summer break, Chris has been running around the nation.

Two months ago, as a junior, Ibarra won the Texas 3A State Championship in the 800m run, winning the gold medal with a time

of 1:52.45, which set a new school record and came within .61 seconds of the 3A state record of 1:51.48.

Ibarra was invited shortly after the medal ceremony to compete in the Great Southwest Track and Field Classic held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The meet was set for early June and the top representatives from the following states were invited;

Arizona, California, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Missouri, and Kansas.

It was a big event with plenty of good athletes which were mostly state champions in their respective categories. A committee had

to approve each state representative, and usually selected the top three qualifiers from each state championship team.

The stadium in Albuquerque is a mile above sea level, so with the increased elevation Ibarra found it harder to breath, but still turned in a good time of 1:54:58.

Ibarra represented the state of Texas well finishing fourth overall in the 800m run, and was afterwards invited to participate in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC.

The race in North Carolina was a true National meet where the best runners in the country participated, with most of the athletes being state champions as well.

Ibarra finished the 800m event in North Carolina with a time of 1:52:77, his second best time of the year, and placed 15th overall with another good showing for Texas.

To follow these achievements, Ibarra will be competing in the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics this weekend at Liberty-Eylau High School.

This meet is the National Qualifier track meet, and the top three athletes in each event will advance to the National Junior Olympics to be held in Humble near Houston July 28-August 4.

Chris will be running with the Texarkana Trailblazers Track Club, and he will compete in the 800m run and in the 4 X 400m relay.

Ibarra will begin his running events around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 1.

The Amateur Athletic Union is one of the largest, non-profit and volunteer sports organizations in

the world. There are more than 500,000 members and 60,000 volunteers around the natio
