Last Tuesday the Campbell River Track and Field Club hosted its first Hershey’s Track Meet.  This free community event was attended by more than 35 children aged 9-14 years.

Each child competed in up to three track and field events including a standing long jump, softball throw, 100m dash, and 600-1200m distance run.

The Comets coaches organized and ran the meet, with many of the senior Comets athletes volunteering to measure and/or time the events.

These athletes, including former Comet Brendan Hoff, were more than happy to give pointers and encouragement to the younger competitors.

Attendance was made even sweeter as every participant also received a delicious Hershey’s treat.

These fun meets are held throughout North America to help promote physical fitness, participation and sportsmanship, while introducing children to the basics of track and field…the RUN, JUMP and THROW principles.

Sponsored by Hershey’s, the track meets have been held for more than 36 years, with regional finalists eligible to attend the North American Finals Meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. later in August.

Some notable results of the meet included two triple winners:

Trevor Nast (boys 11-12) softball throw/100m/standing long jump

Wyatt Murray (boys 9-10) softball throw/100m/600m

And two double winners:

Antoine Minfray (boys 13-14) softball throw/1200m

Lauren Linegar (girls 11-12) softball throw/100m
