INDIANAPOLIS - 2006 U.S. Junior champion and two-time Nike Outdoor National champion Walter Henning broke his own American Junior record en route to his win in the men's hammer throw Friday at the 2007 Finish Line USA Junior Track & Field Championships at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis.
Already the American Junior record-holder, Henning (South Huntington, N.Y.) broke his own American and meet records in winning the men's hammer throw with a heave of 73.59 meters/241 feet 5 inches. His previous records were set at the 2006 Finish Line USA Junior Championships. 2006 USATF Junior Olympic champion Jordan Stray (Centralia, Wash.) took second with his throw of 64.72m/212-04.
2006 U.S. Junior champion Tori Anthony (Palo Alto, Calif.) won her second title in as many years with a clearance of 4.05m/13-3.5. 2007 Big 10 runner-up Alicia Rue (Plymouth, Minn.), a freshman at the University of Minnesota, as the runner-up with 4.00m/13-1.5 and 2007 Nebraska state champion Natalie Willer (Elkhorn, Neb.) was third at the same height.
In the men's 200 meters, yesterday's 100m champion Arthur Wims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) ran into a headwind (-1.6mps) to win in 20.86 seconds. Tennessee freshman Kyle Stevenson (Memphis, Tenn.) came in second in 21.02 and 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals 100m runner-up Ryan Bailey (Salem, Ore.) was third in 21.20.
American Junior record holder Chris Hill (Sulphur, La.) won the men's javelin with a throw of 69.12m/226-9. Colorado freshman Kevin Fasing (Denver, Colo.) took second with 65.99m/216-6 and 2007 Pennsylvania state champion Justin Shirk (Harrisburg, Pa.) was third with 65.56m/215-1.
UVA freshman Stephanie Garcia (South Riding, Va.) ran away with the crown in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, crossing the line in 10:26.41. Arkansas freshman Megan Jackson (Middlebury, Ind.) was a distant second in 10:50.24.
In the women's triple jump, 2006 U.S. champion Ke'Nyia Richardson (Oakland, Calif.) won her second consecutive U.S. Junior title with her hop, skip and a jump of 13.47m/44-2.5. Richardson also competed in the open (elite) women's triple jump on Thursday where she placed sixth with 13.51m/44-4. Ashika Charan (West Covina, Calif.), who took third in the long jump Thursday, was the runner-up with 13.11m/43-0.25.
Texas A&M freshman Zuheir Sharif (Elk Grove, Calif.) won the men's triple jump with his leap of 15.86m/52-0.5 while two-time Illinois state champion Troy Doris (Bolingbrook, Ill.) took second with 15.81m/51-10.5.
Latavia Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa), a freshman at LSU, won the women's 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:06.16. Just behind her in second was 2007 Nike Outdoor National runner-up Dominique Jackson (Fairfield, Calif.) in 2:06.41.
On the men's side, 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals champion Cory Primm (Westlake, Calif.) won the 800m in 1:49.76. University of Albany freshman Johnathan Moore (Fort Johnson, N.Y) was second in 1:50.50.
2007 Gatorade National Youth Track & Field Athlete of the Year and 2006 U.S. Junior champion Emily Pendleton (Elmore, Ohio) won the women's discus with a toss of 49.52m/162-6. Georgia Tech freshman Samantha Musil (Dubois, Neb.) took second with 49.38m/162-00. Yesterday's shot put champion Sara Neubauer (Bottineau, N.D.) took third with 49.21m/161-5.
High school phenom Bianca Knight (Ridgeland, Miss.) won the women's 200m in a windy 22.93 (+2.3mps). Lynne Lane, yesterday's 100m champion, was hot on her heels for second place in 22.94.
National Youth record holder Leigh Petranoff (Cranston, R.I.) won the women's javelin with a heave of 44.01m/144-05. Yvette Schubert (Walker, La.) was second with 40.33m/132-4.
Also at the track, Arizona freshman Elizabeth Patterson (Rowlett, Texas) won the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.76m/5-9.25. Teammate Jasmin Day (Costa Mesa, Calif.) was the runner-up and Piper High School senior Krystle Schade (Sunrise, Calif.) was third, all at the same height. Kenny Klotz (Portland, Ore.), who took second in the 5,000m yesterday, won the men's 10,000m in 30:51.75 and Mustang High School senior Kevin Schwab (Mustang, Okla.) was second in 30:56.75.
