Grizzlies' Carroll is 30th in cross country National Finals
Granite Bay’s Clare Carroll capped her fall freshman season by finishing 30th in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals on Saturday in San Diego.
Carroll, one of two freshmen in the girls race, ran 5 kilometers in 18 minutes, 32 seconds at Morley Field at Balboa Park. Senior Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., won the race in 16:53. Senior Lukas Verzbicas of Orland Hills, Ill., won the boys race in a time of 14:59. Chris Kigar, a senior at El Camino in Sacramento, was 38th in 16:01. Verzbicas became the third male to capture back-to-back national titles.
Carroll chose an aggressive start over a conservative approach, according to her mom, Kim Carroll. The fast pace set by the seniors took a toll on Carroll’s legs over the second half of the race. The top 15 finishers, 12 of whom were seniors, earned All-America stat
