Two of the county’s best distance runners are among 40 runners from across the nation that will compete next Saturday in San Diego at the 2011 Footlocker National Cross Country Championships.
St. Margaret’s senior Billy Gaudreau and El Toro senior Kevin Durham will represent the county after finishing in top 10 at the West Regional qualifying meet Saturday morning at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Gaudreau, who won his second straight Division 5 state title last week in Fresno, crossed the finish line fifth in a time of 15:42.
Durham (fourth in Division 1 at the state meet) claimed the final automatic qualifying spot, placing 10th in a time of 15:50.
La Costa Canyon senior Darren Fahy, who won the Division 2 state title, won the qualifying race in a time of 15:29.
Marina junior Richie Soto (16:16), Tesoro senior Kyler Fisk (16:27), and Godinez junior Jose Penaloza (16:29) all finished in the top 50.
Woodbridge senior Molly Babcock was the top county finisher in the girls qualifying race, coming in 14th place with a time of 18:46.
Marina junior Kylie Nishisaka (19:23), Edison junior Haley Seward (19:24), and Tesoro junior Emily Scharmann (19:29) were among the top 50 finishers in the race.
Karlie Garcia of Oakmont High in Roseville was the top qualifier with a time of 17:46.
The 2011 Footlocker National Cross Country championship races will be held at Morley Field in Balboa Park.
The girls race is scheduled for 9:15 a.m., with the boys race starting at 10 a.m.
