The Northwest Flyers Track Club qualified 101 athletes in 154 track & field events for USA Track & Field’s Region XII Youth Junior Olympics Championship to be held at Abilene Christian University on July 13-17.
The Region XII meet is the statewide youth track & field championship meet for Texas. The top three qualifiers at the Region XII Championship will advance to the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics National Championship to be held in Sacramento, California at the end of July.
To qualify for the Region XII Championship, the Northwest Flyers had to place in the top 6 in their events during the USATF Gulf Association Championship meets recently held at Dyer Stadium in Houston. The Gulf Association Championship meets included teams from the greater Houston area, including Beaumont, Port Arthur, Brenham and Galveston.
Northwest Flyers first place finishers at the Gulf Association Championship meets advancing on to Abilene include: Youth Girls (ages 13-14) Cori Runnels in the shot put (101’05”) and April Wiederhold in the pole vault; Intermediate Girls (ages 15-16) Faith Banker in the 1500 meter run (5:04.00) and 3000 meter run (10:58.69), Ruth Barlass in the 3000 meter race walk (19:04.89) and Brittany Wooten in the pole vault (12’00”); Young Women (ages 17-18) Krystyn Bradley in the javelin (114’09”) and Zoe Wright in the long jump (17’01.50”); Midget Boy (ages 11-12) Steven Berry in the 1500 meter race walk (8:13.28); Youth Boys (ages 13-14) Dillon Berry in the 3000 meter race walk (18:58.77) and Gabriel Poth in the pole vault (11’06.25”); Intermediate Boys (ages 15-16) Mason Ezzelle in the pole vault (12’11.75”), Zachary Harrison in the discus (117’02”), Dillon Worley in the 3000 meter run (9:28.65) and Alfred Zuniga in the 3000 meter race walk (21:51.54); and, Young Men (ages 17-18) Trevor Bolin in the javelin (168’10”) and Austin Schankel in the 5000 meter run (17:00.27).
Three Northwest Flyers athletes also recently competed at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor National Championship at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, including Devin Bogert (javelin), Lauren Rover (heptathlon) and Leslie Schilsky (400 meter hurdles). Read More:
