Harvard-Westlake freshman Alex Florent won the high jump with a school-record clearance of 5 feet, 10 inches Saturday at the L.A. County track and field championships at Warren High in Downey.

Florent, recently featured as an athlete of the month in the April edition of Sports Illustrated for Kids, ascended to the top of the state rankings and tied for second in the country among reported outdoor marks, just an inch behind national leader Gabrielle Williams of Reed, Nev.

Florent's effort, which broke her previous program record by two inches, eclipsed her winning jump of 5-8 at the AAU Junior Olympics in August in New Orleans.
