Tri hard: They may be small but (L-R)) Montanna McAvay, Joel Davidson and Hannah Witten are out to prove they are just as tough as adult competitors when it comes to training and competing. Picture: MIKE WATT
THEY may only be a fraction of the size of their adult counterparts, but the training schedules of Far Northern junior triathletes are just as tough as the big guys.
As the Challenge Cairns ultraman triathlon draws closer, young competitors are gearing up for the junior event to take place on the Esplanade on June 4.
Woree State School teacher Joel Murray saw an opportunity to develop young triathletes in Cairns and formed a squad of school-aged competitors last year.
Since then, squad members have achieved top-10 finishes at state and national competitions.
Year 9 St Monica’s student Hannah Witten finished seventh at the recent national triathlon championships and she encouraged others to register for the event.
“It’s definitely worth it,” she said.
