CAPE CORAL — South Fort Myers took two boys sprinting events and Estero won two distance events at the Lee County Athletic Conference championship meet at Cape Coral-Mariner on Wednesday night.
The Wolfpack took third place in the boys meet with 78 team points, while the girls were seventh with 36. The Wildcats’ girls were fifth and the boys were sixth.
South senior Sammy Watkins won the 100-meter dash with time of 10.52. He came back with a 21.40 finish in the 200. In the latter race, he had a bit of let-up towards the end.
“No one was pushing me,” said Watkins, who will play wide receiver at Clemson in the fall. “I was pushing myself.”
Watkins also led South to a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay. He ran a leg, taking a lead that stood up.
Kacy Smith set the tone for Estero early in the day. She made up a 20-meter difference on the anchor leg of the 4x800 relay for the win, and led at the end of all four laps on the mile with a 5:10 finish. On the 2-mile, Smith ran with teammate Bethany Jenkins, literally pushing her a few times, to help her to a win with a time of 11:46.
“It is good just to get up there and push the pace a little bit,” Smith said.
The Estero boys also won the 4x800.
Dunbar ended Fort Myers’ streak to take the girls championship, while the Green Wave won the boys title.
