Mater Dei Sophomore sensation Dominique Ruotolo is expecting to out shine her impressive performance last year. In her freshman season Ruotolo soared 37’6 in the triple, 17’6 in the long, and 5’3 in the high jump. Ruotolo was the Orange County Triple Jump Champion, Trinity League Champion in both the triple and long jump, and set the Trinity League triple jump record.

“Dominique has really stepped up especially in her maturity and work ethic this season. She really has her mind set on competing at the National level and earning a scholarship to USC; the dedication she has shown is right on pace,” said Coach Keinan Briggs.

Dominique competed this past weekend at the CA Winter Track and Field Championships and had a sold day setting three new season best marks. Ruotolo long jumped 16’7, took 6th place in the high jump with her clearance of 5’2, and placed 3rd in the triple jump with her mark of 36’6.

Ruotolo and the rest of her teammates expect to start season with marks better than last year’s, which seems like a tall order but Coach Keinan Briggs has answered that task every year with many of his athletes.

“Last year I really let Dominique play, we had seniors Jazmin Moss (TJ 38’8.25 / LJ 17’6), Kyra Coley (TJ 37’11), and junior Taylor Ashmore (17’6.50) to carry the weight on the jumps side. My only goal was to get her accustom to my program and hopefully clear a height in the high jump, she went well beyond our team needs,” said Coach Briggs. “This year will be focused on the technical aspects so she can really get to the level we both think she can be.”

Another to watch out for is senior Taylor Ashmore who also competed at the CA Winter Championships; she finished with a long jump mark of 16’11.

The Mater Dei Monarchs open up their 2016 season Saturday, February 27, at the Eagle Invitational at Santa Maragarita Catholic High School.
