Delray Beach's Ky'Shawn Byrd and Corey Variance have punched their tickets to an upcoming national track and field competition in Texas as a result of standout performances at the Region 10 AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Junior Olympics Regional Qualifier at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar recently.

Byrd finished in second place in the 100-meter dash, and was third in the long jump in the Boys 8-Under (age group), while Variance took first place in the long jump and was runner-up in the 80-meter hurdles in the Boys 11 (age group).

Both boys, who are members of the Delray Beach Blazing Elite Track Stars Club, will now compete in the AAU Junior Olympics in Houston July 27-Aug. 6. The top five in the field events and top six in the running events in Miramar earned a berth in the national competition.

"They reached their full potential [in Miramar]. I really believed that they had a chance to go to the Junior Olympics," said their coach, Sabrina Shuman. "This is their first time going to the Junior Olympics. I think it is very exciting for them.
