The Davis High girls cross country team has had one main focus this year:
the TEAM. Everything we do, we do as a TEAM. We are focusing on working hard
together, and sacrificing together to meet our TEAM goals. It started with a
successful summer of training, including meeting 3-4 times a week and a TEAM
high altitude camp at the beginning of August.

Each member of the TEAM knows that they have a role to play that makes the rest
of the TEAM stronger. We have started off the cross country season with a few key
victories in both the varsity and the JV races at the American Fork Grass Relays, the
Davis County Clipper Meet, BYU Invitational, and Murray Invitational. The
BYU Invite was our first big challenge with most of the top teams in the
state, and the top team from Montana (Bozeman). The girls stepped up to meet
the challenge, winning by 100 points. A major part of our race plan was to
be patient until the 2 mile mark. At the 2 mile the girls each thought of
their teammates and all of their sacrifices they have made to get to this
point. They had each written the initials of their teammates on their hands,
to help them remember. At 2 miles, they looked at their hands and ran as
hard as they could to the finish. After finishing 1st at BYU, we moved to
the #3 spot in the Nike Team National Southwest Region rankings.
We are lead this year by Candace Eddy and Natalie Haws. Candace, a junior,
has had a lot of success in cross country and track. She is coming off of an
outstanding track season in which she ran 4:48.10 in the 1600m, the fastest
in history by a Utah high school girl. Natalie, a senior, has been all-state
in cross country 3 years in a row, looking to make this year #4. A big
surprise this year has been our number 3 runner, Katie Swanson, who played
soccer for Davis last year. Katie has really improved as a runner over the
past 9 months, and has greatly strengthened our TEAM.

Our TEAM's strength is based on our depth and experience. We have 12 girls
who have a shot at being varsity. They are friends, but are also pushing
each other to run their best each day. We also have 4 girls that have
competed at the state meet 2 or more times (Candace Eddy, Natalie Haws,
Kelsey Valentine, Hollie King).

It is a special group of girls this year who are working hard to do great
things as a TEAM throughout the rest of the season.
