Locals strike gold at Hershey's Track and Field meet

Saturday's extreme heat and humidity certainly didn't stop Cornwall-Lebanon School District athletes from making quite the medal haul at the state finals of the Hershey's Track and Field Youth Program.

No less than five Cornwall-Lebanon competitors captured gold medals during Saturday's annual event at Penn State University.

Alyssa Austin led the way for coach Rob Bare's squad, taking first place in the softball throw in the 13-14 age group with a toss of 155 feet, four inches.

Joining Austin at the top of the medal stand were Destinee Holloman (girls 13-14 long jump), Evan Horn (boys 13-14 long jump), Madyson Brown (girls 11-12 softball throw) and Olivia Hains (girls 11-12 800 meter run). In all, Cornwall-Lebanon athletes have captured 24 state gold medals since they began competing in the Hershey's Track and Field Youth Program.

In addition, the Cornwall-Lebanon contingents brought home five silver medals, two bronze, and three fourth-place finishes.

The five gold medallists have the possibility of competing in the North American Finals on Aug. 4. Their performances will be checked against those of the winners in their region, which includes seven states and parts of Canada. They will be notified in approximately 10 days if they qualified for the North American meet.
