Clovis High sophomore Meghan Marvin qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals next weekend in San Diego by finishing fifth in the Western Regional on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Marvin, the Central Section Division I champion who placed third at last weekend's high school state tournament, ran 17:37 in the girls seeded race, just 2 seconds behind the third-place finisher.
Jordan Hasay, the Mission Prep junior who won her third straight state title last weekend, won the girls race at 17:17. It was her third straight Foot Locker regional title.
Clovis coach Rob Brenner said Marvin is only the fourth Central Section girl to reach the Foot Locker Nationals since the race began in 1977.
I don't think people realize what a big feat it is, Brenner said. There are many years we qualify nothing from the Valley. It's pretty huge.
Clovis High's Sayla Barserian won the Foot Locker Regional girls sophomore race in 18:35.
Chris Schwartz of Foothill High in Bakersfield finished seventh in the boys seeded race at 15:20 to also qualify for nationals.
German Fernandez of Riverbank, near Modesto, who broke the Woodward Park course record and the state meet record in winning the boys Division IV title last weekend, won the Foot Locker Regional at 14:53. He was the only boy to break 15 minutes.
The Foot Locker Nationals are scheduled for Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego.
