Camelsback Classic at Camelsback Park in Boise, ID

The 2009 Cross Country season began in earnest yesterday as a number of its top teams faced off in Camelsback Park in Boise. It was a day that had already seen Dathan Ritzenhein run 12:56.27 to break the decade-old record of Bob Kennedy in Zurich and, although Kate Jamboretz of Boise did not break the course record of 19:34 set by Footlocker finalist Nicole Nielsen, the girls’ race offered some quality competition. Jamboretz defeated defending State champion Liz Brandon of Eagle with a fine time of 20:12.94. That time was the second best for the event & tops the mark of 20:28 run by Karleigh Gempler of Borah in 2006, when Gempler won the state title. The Boise girls had a strong team effort that included a third place finish by Michelle Hickerson and they won the team competition by a 34 to 48 verdict over Eagle. Vallivue finished just a bit behind Eagle with 55 points to take third.

In the boys’ race the biggest surprise was that two-time State Champion Eric Fitzpatrick of Boise did not run. Zach Burney of Columbia took advantage of Fitzpatrick’s absence to win the race with a time of 17:20, as he defeated John Robinson of Vallivue by eight seconds. The Mountain View boys dominated the team competition by placing three runners in the top five to earn a convincing victory over Eagle 38 to 89. Boise had 95 points to claim third edging Borah by four points. The boys’ record for the race was set last year by Barak Watson, who ran 16:05 as he defeated Fitzpatrick by eleven seconds. For Burney the was a marked improvement over last year’s finish, where he placed 7th overall. Jamboretz, incidentally, garnered third last year.
