Alisha Harper of Brookfield East won conference titles in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles Tuesday.
The Brookfield East boys and the Brookfield Central girls won Greater Metro Conference outdoor track and field championships Tuesday, but what else is new?
East, the reigning Division 1 state champion, finished with 187 points - 66½ ahead of runner-up Menomonee Falls - to sweep the outdoor, indoor and relay meets for the fourth straight season.
The Central girls finished with 172 points compared to East's 151½ to win their fifth triple crown in the last six years.
"We didn't have our best meet today at all," Central coach Lorie Lewis said. "It was stressful for us the whole day. We had no heights in the pole vault and we didn't have one of our throwers, so we lost quite a few points. But the girls really wanted to get the triple crown, so there were other areas where we really picked it up. By far, it wasn't our best meet of our season. But we were still good enough."
The East boys set two outdoor conference records according to Spartans coach Mike Steiner: Landon McDonald, Josh Breider, Will Sutton and Alec James in the 800-meter relay (1 minute 29.23 seconds) and Glen Harold in the pole vault (15 feet). Harold started the day ranked third in the state with a 15-6 from earlier this season.
"That's hard to do in our league," Steiner said. "This is a very good league with a lot of good athletes. The kids are well-coached, so breaking two conference records is big. But it was a team effort because we had a lot of kids score in a lot of events."
East's Brad Johnson won the 800 in 1:56.42 after winning the race at state last season.
"He had a good day," Steiner said. "Brad's passionate about track and field. And he doesn't like to lose, so he gives you a pretty good effort every time he's on the track."
East won four other events, including Mitch Douglas in the 110 hurdles (14.82) and 300 hurdles (39.37).
Another highlight among the boys was Brookfield Central's Carl Hirsch, the reigning Gatorade state track athlete of the year. He won the 1,600 in 4:14.70 and the 3,200 in 9:24.21 after winning both races at state last year.
"His times are starting to come down a little bit," Central coach Mark Pulkownik said. "We haven't had great weather, but now we're starting to a little bit. So he's starting to come around and times are dropping a little bit."
The Central girls finished first in six events, including Elizabeth Flatley in the 800 (2:19.96) and 1,600 (5:04.07). Earlier times this season have her ranked first in both races among area runners.
"She is just running terrific right now," Lewis said. "She hasn't been beaten yet this season. She's looking really good."
Other two-event winners were Mikayla Robertson of Menomonee Falls and Alisha Harper of Brookfield East.
Robertson, who ranks first in the state in the triple jump, won with a 37-7¾ and Harper was second at 36-7¾. Robertson also took first in the 400 in 1:00.76.
Harper placed first in the 100 hurdles in 16.00 and the 300 hurdles in 48.05.
"For the high hurdles, I was really focusing on trying to run hard and get a good three-step in," said Harper, who won the low hurdles at conference last season. "I was really focusing on my form this year and trying to perfect it from last year. And the low hurdles, I was just trying to pace myself in a way so I wouldn't burn out at the end."
