Portland Meadows:-- Portland, Oregon metro area youth running club Bowerman Track Club competed in their first full team competition at the Nike NXN Pre-Nationals meet at Portland Meadows race track. The BTC group showed very well and captured both team titles easily. On the girls side the team was led by Elizabeth Rinck who finished second overall in a time of 10:47 just behind girls winner Devianna Salcedo in a time of 10:40 from McFarland Middle School in Southern California for the 3000 meter course. Rinck was followed closely by teammates Ember Stratton and Makenna Schumacher in 11:00 and 11:06.

The race started out with Salcedo moving out to an early and strong lead with another runner. Rink and Stratton worked together and moved up over the first half mile to get themselves in position to take a run at Salcedo in the later part of the race. After passing the mile mark Schumacher had also moved up well with teammates Stephanie Finley, Sarah Lyell and Greta Anderson and looked like she my go after Rinck and Stratton but the lead was just a bit too much for Schumacher to overcome as she settled for fifth overall.
The girls where happy with their races but all felt that they had better races in them. “ It was a good effort by the girls today and they will only get stronger as we progress through our training this season” said coach Tony Rinck.
On the boys side the BTC group had a good day as well. Cole Grieb led the team with a fourth place finish in a time of 10:30. Race winner Zane Fodge from Duniway Middle School in McMinnville, Oregon was the winner of the race in 10:03. Grieb was followed by teammates Ethan Reese, Steven Rowland, Nate Hicken and Dyer Healy.
Grieb ran a smart race and moved up steadily throughout the race and finished strong over the final 600 meters to pull away from teammate Reese and hold him off by a narrow margin at the finish. “I think I could have finished higher if I had gone out a little faster in the start, next race I need to push a little more earlier” said Grieb.
