HOOVER, Ala. • A group of Barstow High School cross country runners took third place at the 2010 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Karlan Smith, Paul Haefele and Warren Woods ran for the Southern California Roadrunners intermediate division team that took home bronze medals at Veterans Park last weekend. The team ran a time of 1 hour and 29 minutes. They were only five minutes behind the first place team.

Barstow’s James Haefele ran for the youth division Roadrunners team that took 17th place at the meet.

Smith said the Barstow runners are happy with the outcome.

“It feels good because it’s our first year,” Smith said. “No one thought we would finish with the top teams and we ended up third. We’re taking bronze medals home.”
