By Amy Vinchattle/The Tribune Gilbert's Gabby Stearns leads teammate Mallory Spear, right, and West Marshall's Victoria Pothast in the 400-meter dash Monday in Gilbert.

Sadie Timms spent last year’s Bengal Relays working behind the scenes. It’s tradition for the Gilbert middle school to volunteer at the lone girls varsity track meet of the season.

But Monday at the 2011 Bengal Relays, Timms was far from behind the scenes. She was one of the main attractions.

The freshman won both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs.

It helped host Gilbert extend its winning streak to 17 straight meets, which includes last year’s state title. The Tigers had 163 points to win the Class A team event.

CMB won the Class B event with 141 points.

“We got a pretty good streak going,” Gilbert coach Karl Terrones said. “Anytime we add to it, it’s a pretty good day.”

While Timms has been an integral part of Gilbert’s five first-place team finishes this season, she wasn’t sure if she would be a part of the track team when she worked the Bengal Relays last season.

“I didn’t know if I was going to play soccer or run track,” Timms said. “I had no idea when I was here last year. It was going to be a tough decision.”

The choice became clear after Timms finished third in the fall at the Class 2A cross country state meet.

And Timms has helped Gilbert overcome the graduation of Megan Fiscus, who is now on the UNI track team.

The Tigers are serious contenders to repeat as state champions.

“(Timms) had such great success in cross country, and I think it’s really carried over into track,” Terrones said. “I don’t think at the start of the school year many people realized just how good she is.”

People are noticing now.

“She’s someone who really pushes the pace and pushes me,” said junior Gabby Stearns, who won the 400-meter dash Monday and is the top-ranked runner inthe 800 meter run in Class 2A. “She’s been so big for this team. She’s been perfect.”

Timms’ success in cross country has made the transition to track easier.

“I just know what to expect and I’m more prepared,” Timms said. “I know what it’s like to run with older girls and bigger girls. It’s not as intimidating.”

Timms and all the other athletes had to deal with chilly weather (43 degrees at start time), strong winds and light rain on Monday.

“It makes it harder but, to be honest, I like it,” Timms said. “I like the challenge. Going into the wind, it makes me go hard and then you want to use the wind to your advantage the stretch where it’s on your back.”

Mallory Spear also had two individual wins (100- and 200-meter dashes) for Gilbert. Her twin sister Madison Spear also won the 100-meter hurdles.

Gilbert also produced the winning shuttle hurdle relay and sprint medley relay teams.

“I think our girls get extra excited for this meet,” Terrones said. “We always have this event the Monday after prom, so a lot of these girls are going on little or no sleep. So we always need that extra adrenaline to get us through.”

While the Tigers are used to winning meets, the Class B victory was a big step for CMB. Its battle with second-place Madrid came down to the final event.

CMB huddled around in a circle on their knees, held hands and had their eyes closed as the results were announced. Once they were named the victors, the team jumped in jubilation.

“This is something new for us,” said Anne Deutsch, who led the Raiders with individual first-place finishes in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run. “It’s really a great feeling because we are usually third, fourth or fifth, in that range.

“It really made it a team sport today. We were on edge for every event because we knew coming in we could win. And we have a small team and it’s really compact and that made it even more special.”
